My Boyfriend did something very wrong towards me (physical violence) but lied to his family?

Last Christmastime my bf ( of almost 3 years) committed an act of violence towards me and caused me bruises and alot of hurt. He had never done this before, or since. When his sister-in-law saw my bruises she and my bf's brother asked what happened. I told them very little, but they figured out what happened, because at this time, unknown to me, they already knew of my bf's past history of domestic violence in other relationships. When I was not there, they confronted him and were angry with him for doing this. But for some reason, after he got done 'explaining' his 'side of the story' to them and minimizing what he had done...they started to act differently towards me, and for the last year have communicated very little with me and have been at times hurtful towards me, and I didn't really know why. I have been nothing but kind, loving and good towards his whole family. Even though my bf has had this past history...and also hurt me this one time, he has been going to a special counseling group for domestic violence and anger management issues and there has not been any more physical abuse towards me.

Last night they said some terribly cruel things to me. Things I would never say to anyone. They said they blamed me for my bf's and all the family problems and said other things about me that are entirely untrue...and very hurtful...and I wondered how come they could ever act like this..with such absolute cruelty...even telling me to 'go back to my own country and to my own family because 'we are not your family and we don't care or need you or want you in the family'. I also found out that they talk to all family memebers about me in a derogatory way..even the recent neice who came to visit all of us from Italy. By the time they got done talking behind my back, she was practically looking at me sideways and I could tell something was wrong, even though at the time I did not know why she and even their cousins acted somewhat rude towards me...when they came to my bf's and my house for a barbeque. I had happily made all the food and really had been looking forward to getting to know them and welcomed them warmly to our home...only to find them distant and cold towards me...and at the time I tried to ignore it and I didn't know why they acted this way either.

I found out that when that last year, when my bf's brother and his wife had confronted my bf for his abuse of me, that he told them I was a 'trouble maker, and exagerating...and said very hurtful untrue things about me...to deflect what he had actually done...and shift the blame on me...and they have not liked me since. I was never aware of any of these things that he said. I feel crushed and my spirit feels utterly broken. I only slept a couple of hours last night, and the rest of the time sobbed so hard I could hardly catch my breath. I woke up crying, and have tears as I write this, as what happened seemed inhumane and heartless and is so painful. The things they said were actually more cruel than anything my bf has EVER even said to me. At least to my face. But evidently he is fully capable of lying about me and denagrating me to others when I have no idea about him doing this.

I kept asking my bf if he ever said those types of things to them back when they had confronted him a year ago when I was not present? He kept denying ever saying anything bad about me. But something doesn't feel right about that, as I can't imagine his brother and sister-in-law ever being so cruel and deliberately hurtful and blaming towards me like this, and kept having the feeling they had to be influenced by him.

This morning he left for work. I asked him one more time to 'swear on his own life' that he never gave his family a bad impression about me behind my back. He then said to me "I don't remember everything I said to them about you...but it shouldn't matter, they have known you for nearly three years and should know whatever I say or have said is not true and should have not been cruel to you."

So, he finally semi-admitted to saying things about me to devalue me and put me down and blame me for his problems...by at least admitting he 'doesn't remember everything he said'...and giving them a very bad opinion about me...all behind my back. I was not aware of any of this, just had noticed their change of heart towards me over the last year that didn't seem to have a rhyme or reason.

I am so hurt, and exhausted from crying and the emotional turmoil this has all caused...especially to myself.

What should I do? I now think that after whatever false tales my bf said about me to his brother and his sister-in-law behind my back has irrepairably tainted everything they feel and think about me, no matter what I say or do. I am soooo incredibly hurt and feel devastated by this situation. I have NEVER done anything to any of them. I have never been rude or ever even been upset with anyone in the family I have always been happy and enjoyed when we all got togeth

Think girl. He has a history of domestic violence. He's already beat you once and you've only been together for 3 years. Do you honestly think that if you spend the rest of your life with this guy, it's never gonna happen again? Don't be one of those victim wives.

I think you can do better. Someone in the world will love you so much more than this jerk and treat you with a million times more respect. It's pretty obvious this guy doesn't respect you whatsoever....cheating.....backstabbing.… That's some kinda way to spend your life... I know I'd never want that in a million years.

I make some of the best biscotti anyone who has tasted it has ever had. I will make 2 batches (about 36 biscotti) 3 people will eat them all in about 2 hours. I brought some to my old boss (an elderly man who lived in Italy his whole life) and even he thought they were amazing. I am in college and cannot afforded car insurance so it is hard to have a job because I already spend an hour and a half on the bus for school and back. I need to save up some money for clothes for school and hopefully overtime to be able to pay for my car insurance. Do you think cafes would by biscotti/cookies/bars from someone else than a big company? Does any1 else know how I could sell my treats and make some much needed money? I made a website for my treats, anyone have a next step I can take to sell my treats. Any help would be amazingly appreciated!

What i suggest is you make some of your best baches and take them around to cafes . ask to speak to the manager and explain to them that you ahve been told you can make the besat biscotti anyone has ever tasted. Then they may let you wrap it up in cellophane bags and put it at the counter. You would ofcorse have to give them a fair chunk of the profit , but for a little bit of baking it may be worth it.

It was a great center for trade, and made Italy very wealthy. It was able to help sponsor the arts, music, inventors etc. There was a lot of investing in inventions.

Thinkers also came in from the used-to-be Byzantine empire, which had collapsed. The Byzantines were still attached to the old Roman empire, and many wished to go back to the place where it all started; Italy. Not only that, but Italy had a much more promising future, as trade was flourishing. These thinkers brought with them the Greco-Roman ways of thinking, as well as Latin texts. Muslims also brought in old texts which made more people question the Bible, or at the very least the world itself. These new ideas increased the ideas of humanism, and would also lead to the scientific revolution.

Overall, Italy's position in the Mediterranean made it a hub for trading, and many different cultures came to Italy, compared to other countries where their sea trade and access to foreign ports was much more limited. So, these countries didn't get to experience other cultures as much, and benefit from different ways of thinking. They also didn't get to benefit from trade as greatly as Italy did, and didn't have as much money to sponsor "projects."

My aunt left a recipe for a favorite family recipe that was a family tradition for Xmas and Easter. It is making a nervous weck out of me and my family (they scatter when I say I'm making). It is sponge cake with a custard icing. Here's the catcher. The icing is made with only whole milk, sugar, cornstarch and the peel of one large orange. Tint to desired coloring. I have a horrible time with this custard and then getting to stay on the cake. Does anyone have a original recipe. It is from Northern Italy - Palermo. HELP.

Palermo is not in northern Italy. It is in Sicily, the deep south of Italy.

They constantly did it every single game, and then I read an article in Sports Illustrated where they mentioned that. It's so annoying, "Spain are world champions, Italy are in trouble now." Countries are singular, do they know that the word "is" is part of the English language? Why does ESPN hire people that do not know how to speak proper English?

So the difference you heard is because of different practices in American and British English. Most of those announcers on ESPN were NOT American, so you heard them using plural verbs for collective nouns, which were countries in this case.

Ok, so I am trying to go to Rome for 5 days. I can't seem to found a cheap but nice hotels to stay at for under 100.00 dollars( I just need a bed, no bugs and my own bathroom).... I use the Venere site for hotels here in Italy. You can sort by location in the city using the map and then by price, ratings by past guests or other criteria. There are around 600 hotels in the database for Rome alone.

Prices vary a lot on a given hotel depending on exactly when you'll be here; you'll need to check your specific dates. Generally, there are more cheaper places around the train station or further out. The area around the train station is reasonable - there's good access to public transportation, or it's not too far to walk to some of the attractions - the Colosseum is about 20 minutes on foot. One place that you might want to look at for your specific dates is the Hotel Romano which is right across the street from the Forum and just up the street from the Colosseum: http://www.venere.com/hotels/rome/hotel-… .

You could also consider a convent stay - sometimes that's cheaper.

If you arrive at Fiumicino airport, just take the Leonardo Express train to Roma Termini station. It's a direct connection that takes about 31 minutes with no other stops - cost: 11 euro. From there you can get a cab, bus, metro, or walk to your hotel depending on where it is. If you arrive at Ciampino airport, you can take a bus to Roma Termini or catch the bus to the Ciampino train station and take the train to Roma Termini.

Food prices vary a lot depending on where and what you eat. Generally, the food is better and cheaper if you're a little away from the immediate vicinity of the tourist attractions. Menus are posted outside the restaurants and you can check for something that interests you and is within your budget.

In your opinion, what are the must see places everybody must see before they die? After studying abroad, I got bit with the travel bug and want to see as much as I can. I have been to Italy (see practically everything), Spain (Barcelona), Switzerland (Zurich) and France (Paris). I've also been to Canada if that counts lol. Otherwise, what are must sees??

Hi..i'm Giovanna from Italy..I'll come in London for my first time from 6 december to 9 december with my boyfriend and another couple of friend.
I resume my problems and my questions:
I booked my flight with Ryan air and I'll arrive at Stansted at 23.40.
* I'd like know which is the best way to go in the city centre: the Terravision Bus or the Stansted Express Train?
* Which is the best zone to book hotel? We'd like stay in a central zone with easy access to metro e bus, with pub and restaurant near. We have 80? budget for room(double)/night and we don't search a "luxury hotel" but only a clean room for sleep.
* Victoria St. - Bayswater - Kensington - Paddington are the best choices?

Hello Giovanna. I'm pleased that you are due to visit London for the first time. December is a nice time to visit with all the Christmas lights and other things. There are National Express coaches which serve Stansted Airport, and they are probably the cheapest way of getting into the centre. For your return journey, you will probably find the train better as you have to be there early. You can take the Stansted Express from Liverpool Street Station.

I'm not sure about hotels as they all seem to be quite expensive. A friend of mine stayed at a hostel and it was really lovely and quite cheap too. Any of the areas which you mentioned are conveniently placed for sightseeing and you will be able to use buses or the Underground. An Oyster Card costs ?3 to buy and then you can add some money to it to cover the cost of bus and Underground journeys. It works out much cheaper to use that. There are also Travelcards available. I would ask at an Underground station when you arrive in London as they will tell you which is the best option.

Yikes. I read the previous answer, and im sure he's right, it just seems like a lot of money to me. Maybe you should check out EF College Break if you are 18-26, as I have found that they have some good deals. And its $50 off with the discount code hesseln1188. I spent $3,000 total for my 2 week travels to France and Spain, But I bought alot of stuff too. It depends on your spending habits as well, But be prepared to spend. I know that EF Coll. has a " (europe) Grand tour " trip for $3,800, flying out of Chicago, including round trip airfare, hotels, breakfasts, transfers, and other stuff. Oh ya, and last summer I went to Italy for two weeks and I spent 3,200 total. ( i did shop alot though) I hope this helps!

Dear Editor:

So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land is made up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we should tear down the Statue of Liberty because the people now in question aren't being treated the same as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of entry.

Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr. Lujan why today's American is not willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any longer. Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the United States, people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York and be documented. Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home.

They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture.

Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity. Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out. My father fought along side men whose parents had come straight over from Germany, Italy, France and Japan. None of these 1st generation Americans ever gave any thought about what country their parents had come from. They were Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan. They were defending the United States of America as one people. When we liberated France, no one in those villages were looking for the French-American or the German American or the Irish American. The people of France saw only Americans. And we carried one flag that represented one country. Not one of those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another country's flag and waving it to represent who they were. It would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here. These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American. They stirred the melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl.

And here we are in 2007 with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country. I'm sorry, that's not what being an American is all about. I believe that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900's deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a land that has become a beacon for those legally searching for a better life. I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an example by those waving foreign country flags.

And for that suggestion about taking down the Statue of Liberty, it happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the immigration bill. I wouldn't start talking about dismantling the United States just yet.

Answer on Opinions on Letter to the Editor. They refused to print this woman's letter. Why would they do that?

First I want to say how much I like and appreciate this letter. Rosemary has found a very dignified and elegant way to express her feelings (and those of many others, including myself) about a very sensitive subject.

As far as why it hasn't been printed...there is a possibility that the letter was too long to fit into the allotted space for that section. Newspaper space is layed out before the articles are turned in - it is common to give writers a word count with their assignments. It is also possible that this paper was already printing a letter with a similar point of view on this subject and didn't want to be redundant. I'm thinking that's less of a possibility though because any letter that could top Rosemary's would have to be Pulitzer material. Unfortunately, I suspect the most probable reason is money. All media outlets are scared to have any association with controversial views because then they will lose readers/viewers/listeners, and then they will lose advertisers. Sometimes they will lose the advertiser first - such as the holier-than-thou Proctor and Gamble who will pull their ads at the drop of a politically incorrect Don Imus' hat.

If you can read Rosemary's letter and imagine the lives of the early immigrants beyond Ellis Island you will remember that they also embraced capitalism. Free enterprise and lack of taxation were two (very significant) founding principles of our country. (When the taxees realized they could become the taxers that idea was thrown out, but it is a great example of how money driven our country has been.) Really, it always has been and always will be about money.

During the long flight you won't get bored. Most airplanes now have personal TVs in the back of the seat in front of you, as well as a personal entertainment system for which they provide the headphones. It has lots of music channels and you can play several games on your personal tv also.
You can also read lots of magazines. After all of that you will likely fall asleep for a good portion of the flight.
Bring some keychains for your friend. They are easy to carry.
Or anything that has "made in Italy/Greece" on it.
If you want to bring back bigger stuff, put an empty backpack
in your checked luggage. This is so you can put your souvenirs in it and use this backpack as your carry-on on the return flight.

Historic Fascism was a mixed-economy "third way" all but indistinguishable from the government and society the American progressives would like to institute. Portraying themselves "centrist" the brown and black shirts demanded their will over that of the greater part of the population just as union thugs and left-money-backed professional protesters are doing all over the place in America.

Facts:
1) Fascists in Italy and Spain were not openly racist like German National Socialist were. Jews and other ethnic minorities were actually defended by many fascistic regimes (at least as it suited their immediate purposes)

2) All historic fascists were mixed economy socialists. They believed in controlling industry through uber-regulation and state ownership of business (the same as progressives not conservatives)

3) With perhaps the exception of perhaps Franco, nearly all fascists shared progressives' animosity toward the Church and Christianity. Getting the traditional religions out and replacing them with Dialectical Materialism, neo-pagan mythology, and other statist philosophies was a big part their agenda. It allows only the state and its leadership to be worshiped. They shared this with other totalitarian forms of socialism like Marxist Communism.

4) The myth that fascists opposed trade unions and were diametrically opposed to communism is another concocted myth. Hitler may have "hated" communists but in the same manner that he hated other fascists. They were his rivals. He "liberated" fascist Austria under such a premise. Mussolini was an avowed socialist most if not all of his career. He used the trade unions of Italy in much the same manner that progressives of this country do... as an excellent source of revenue and fanatical support... at least during his initial rise to power.

5) How many wars have the so-called "doves" of progressivism initiated or become embroiled in? WWI (Wilson), WWII (FDR I) , Vietnam (JFK and escalated by Johnson), a three-front war in the Middle East (Obama the Peace Prize winner). Sure they may all be "necessary" and "good" but wars they still are and in the modern progressive mind a sure sign of fascist intent.

hi! wow this is really complicated, isn't it?
I think you should slow things right down, leave money to one side, just focus on the friendship/relationship.
I know you don't want to watch her struggle with the debt, but it is big and she can get help in this country with the debt. I had to go bankrupt myself in 2004, and I survived it. She can too.
It is a new relationship, so money really shouldn't be a part of it.
i think it's the same for tickets to Jamaica, unless it's for the wedding!
To keep things seperate is the only way you will know whether she really wants you or the money.
If she really loves you, she will calm down about it after a while, and still be with you, and you can give her emotional/physical support about the debt rather than money.
As you are going to have a baby, you need to keep your money for your baby. Bringing up children is really expensive over the years, so your money belongs to your baby!

I was recently in Venice, which I found to be absolutely wonderful --- and godawful expensive! For example, a can of Diet Coke in St. Mark's Square was 12 Euros! Food is terribly expensive in all of the tourist areas, so a sandwich and a soda pop for lunch can easily run $25 Euros and more per person. Water is not provided, and costs about the same as a can of pop. Things are a bit less expensive the further you get from St. Mark's, but not a whole lot less. If I were planning to return to Venice for a week any time soon, I would be taking at least 1000 Euros (about $1350 US), plus a major credit card, and with that would NOT plan on a "real restaurant" for any meal. Breakfast included with the hotel will be nice, of course, but not a lot of help with expenses. Shops and restaurants do NOT accept US dollars, by the way -- only Euros or a major credit card.

One thing you should know -- it costs money to get into a public restroom in Venice, so be sure you use the bathroom before you leave your hotel, and have Euro coins with you! The local banks do NOT cooperate in changing money, either from one currency to another or even to give you change for Euros. As far as moving, don't worry about packing up they will do EVERYTHING for you. Your Hubby will set up a day with the transportation office, and they will show up and clear out your house. Make sure that all your passports and important papers ARE NOT PACKED. You should be allowed to take one vehicle also.

Being stationed overseas is AWESOME just get out and do stuff, and don't stay on the base. Also it really helps if you learn the language, and Italian is pretty easy as far as languages go. I loved being in Germany, we actually just PCSed to Gordon last week.

Why? Because the technology and human development that we find in the West today is increasingly available in poorer countries.

A factory that is opened in Vietnam today is likely to be cutting-edge, using the same technology if it was opened in Germany.

Mexico has a strong population growth, a reasonably business-friendly legal environment and is right next door to the world's largest market.

Mind you, there are infrastructural bottlenecks, which would need to be overcome. Plus dont get me started on Mexico City's smog.

One nice thing about Italian girls is that they are cosmopolitan. They are no strangers to cultures and trends from around the world (especially in the metropolitan areas) and are thus very open to people of other cultures and to cross-cultural marriage. One thing that might work in your cousin's favor is that the birthrate in Italy is exceedingly low and the marriage age is rising. This has created a unique situation; I have had more than a few Italian acquaintances say that they are reluctant to marry Italian men, who by marrying late, have gotten used to being waited on by their mothers. Republicans and right wing folks in the U.S always paints Europe in a bad way, which I am certain is just a bunch of BS. My expat friends living in countries like Italy, France, Germany tell me that life in Europe is so much better than in America that it sounds almost anti-american ( I guess that's why they are expats). Democrats and left wings in the U.S also lauds the European way of life /system but my European friends here say that American expats and left wings paints too good of a picture as well because of most of them have not lived there for long or not yet fully integrated into the society. Can someone give a fair assessment of life in Europe, specifically western Europe? I am not interested in who is better or worse, I just want to know what it is like.

If the Jews won, they could stay in Italy; if the Pope won, they'd have to convert or leave.

The Jewish people met and picked an aged and wise rabbi to represent them in the debate. However, as the rabbi spoke no Italian, and the Pope spoke no Yiddish, they agreed that it would be a 'silent' debate.

On the chosen day the Pope and rabbi sat opposite each other.

The rabbi looked back and raised one finger.

There you can see an Italian low court, probably reconstructed (i.e. it wasn't a real law court).
Of course most court rooms are smaller and do not allow such a large audience.
Edit: I then discovered that, while the stage was at Rome, it represented a law court in Paris, France. But I think there wasn't a big difference between French courts and Italian courts.

Its a Noble. It looks aluminum It also has some almost pearl white where it isn't aluminum looking it has pearl white and black keys. On the second half of the Accordion it says "A Noble Product Worlds Finest" On the top of the middle part it has a black diamond. It also has straps, they are leather black and brown. Also the accordion is in very good condition. Also on the front it has a noble stamp that says "Noble" "Worlds Finest". On the bottom it says made in Italy. I would really like to know what it is worth. And older lady gave it to me and I just want to know what I might have. Thank you for your help in advance. Noble made accordions of different grades. Sometimes the same model will have greatly varied values as determined by the parts used in it and their condition. I copied this from an older prior post. Some of it doesn't apply in your case but its still good info and explains why it is so difficult to give a value on an accordion that you can't see - both inside and outside. If you really want to find the true value, you will have to take it to an actual accordion repair person - a professional who knows the time, cost and extent of restoration required. Also, you should expect to pay an evaluation/estimate fee for this service.
It takes time to disassemble and evaluate the instrument and no one (or hardly anyone) ever works for free anymore. Also the person doing the evaluation takes a chance on damaging something when he opens the box - the gaskets deterorate, glue comes apart, pieces fall out and the customer doesn't believe that the damage was already there or incidental to opening it up.

Some things that would need to be known in order to value it:
The actual manufacturer
Kind of accordion - Piano, Chromatic, 1 row, 2 row, 3 Row, Cajun, Bayan, Bass, Anglo, Concertina, etc.
Number of Keys Bass and Treble
Size of treble keyboard 17 1/2 inch, 19 inch etc.
Tuning - musette, dry, in tune or not.
State of the leather valves - flexible and soft, hard, curled, etc.
Wax condition - Reeds are usually held in place by a mixture of Bees Wax and Rosen although some are nailed or screwed in - accordions stored in either cold or hot temperatures or in very dry areas usually have wax that has crystallized, melted, or dried up and will need to be replaced. Condition of surface, warping, cracking, rot, etc.
Type of reeds (hand made, hand finished, factory) and condition (no rust or corrosion)
Condition of the felts under the keys
Number of reed banks - treble and bass
Shifts/registers on each side
Bellows condition - is it lined, how many folds, condition of glue and corner leathers, gaskets
Any musty odors or bugs inside - Don't laugh - mealy bugs and moth larva cause havoc in an accordion
Condition of the bass machine - rust etc.
Condition of straps
Case usually really doesn't matter unless its really unusual
Appearance - does it look good.
Playability - ease of use, balance, key travel and pressure required, etc.
Accordions generally have little value as antiques unless there is something special about them - like it was used by a very famous accordionist and it is documented. Or if it is the first of its kind or is really old or is signed by a famous maker
Part of the reason for this is the cost of restoration. If an
accordion has set for 15 or more years without being played, it almost always needs cleaning and tuning and some restoration. For a full size accordion this costs upwards of $400. Perhaps even more than $2,000 for a serious and complete restoration.
So what happens is that an accordion that cost $300 new in 1940 may require $700 in repairs in order to get it working properly and then will have a resale value of only $400. Just not practical... Lots of these 40's and 50's vintage boxes go on sale on ebay and end up selling for $40 - $50. Basically they end up as parts sources or something to play on outside gigs if it looks like rain....A few old accordions are very well made with excellent reeds and potentially could be worth more that a new one if completely restored but only your repair person knows for sure. I have seen a few restorations in the neighborhood of $1500 that resulted in a like new box that was better than 99% of the new accordions out there that cost three or four times as much. The problem is to find a technician that can do that quality of work.

Hope the above info helps. Also it explains why such a simple question like "how much is this accordion worth?" can't be answered easily. It is not that no one wants to help, it is that the answer is very complicated and an answer like "Anywhere from $50 to $5000" doesn't
satisfy the question. This question comes up very often on this and other accordion forums and unfortunately the answer is very rarely what the person asking the question wants to hear. Also unfortunate is that there just are not that many knowledgeable places, at least in the US, where you can take an accordion for evaluation. The average
music store/instrument repair place doesn't have a clue. Sometimes if you’re lucky, the local accordion club will have a member or two that can help. Do a search for Ike's Boxpital - he has a web site that is quite informative, also search the archives of the Accordion Freedom Forum on Yahoo Groups and look up Hans Palms web site for more good info.

Next summer I will be going to Europe and I hope to visit all of these places. I would like to stay a month or two. I would like to do it on my own, because I would feel rushed while on a tour. I need help creating an itinerary and transportation. I might consider staying in hostels, or something like that. So let me know what you think! If you visit Rome, then you are just an hour away by train to Florence. I spent 5 days in Rome and enjoyed every second of it. It is absolutely beautiful!

Tips: buy the metro pass. When I went there, it was just 15 Euro for unlimited metro and bus for an entire week.

I am going to New York on 4th September 5nights and I don't really know what to do. I am going with a group of 7 people, but most days it will be just me and my bf, then meet with everyone in the evening. I have a provisional itinerary below and would like to know if it seems ok? When you go to the big Public Library on 5th Ave and 42nd Street, be sure to go inside Grand Central Station which is just a very short walk away. It was built around 1913. Jacqueline Kennedy helped save it from demolition, so the building was restored instead, the ceiling being repainted with the constellations.
Walking into it looks uneventful, then you reach the main concourse, a huge open space with extremely
high ceiling, everything marble. I'd been there hundreds of times as a kid. Recently i read the most unique thing about this building is, when you are standing in the huge concourse you feel like it is a special moment in your life. That's very true, yet I had not recognized that fact, I only knew a person feels more
cheerful & more significant when they stand in that place. It is historical, you can imagine all the personal
activity that went on there during WW2, troops coming and going on the trains.
I see you're going to the Museum of Natural History. Do not miss going to the Metropolitain Museum of Art. It's on 5th Avenue at about 81 rst Street. Coincidentally Jackie Kennedy was a big fan of this museum, a strong supporter. It has masterpiece paintings, Egyptian exhibits, armour and weapons
from like the 1300s that look new. I'm certain you'll enjoy it, it is very roomy inside and very well lighted.

Yes....I have crisscrossed that lovely country...what DIDN'T I see? We started out on the Mediterranean Sea, near Venice and spent a few days, nosing through some small towns, and traveled slowly west, hitting Lucca, Sienna, the Vatican & Vatican City (where my son performed as part of a chorus) and several small towns along the way....just enjoying the shopping, food and town squares.

We especially enjoyed the Tuscany region, and eating at one of the many farms that grow olives, press oil and serve the fresh foods they grow on long rows of tables in big canvas tents...they often also make the wine they serve...and the food, and dining al fresco is so wonderful.

My boys really enjoyed Pisa, and the leaning tower, and they really loved the statue of David, because the novelty of seeing a naked man is not to be lost on giggling kids!

I was moved to stand before, and marvel at, the Pieta, a piece of art I had studied, read so much about and longed to see since I was a child. It saddened me that it is now encased in a large, acrylic case, for security, because someone hacked at it and tried to break it a few years ago.

I was quite amazed by the overall lack of security at the museums, when so many of the artifacts, and the buildings themselves, are centuries old...I am used to the Smithsonian, where they guard even the pamphlets at the Visitor's Center like they are precious treasurers.

Before flying back to the U-S, we spent nearly a week in Rome, seeing the Coliseum, the fountain of Trevi, all the monuments, the museums the shopping...

I noticed that the Italian people have such a sense of style, always seem put-together, and never, ever did I see anyone bopping around in sweats. I fell in love with the architecture, the cobblestone streets that still remain in many of the small towns...and I also loved the town squares that are part of the every-day life of so many folks.

When you get off your flight there is only one way to go, to the train. The airport isn't like the ones here. The train will take you directly to the baggage claim area. From there there is a train that will take you directly to the Grand Stazione Termini. If you've never done it it sounds intimidating but once you do it you'll see how easy it is. Just follow everyone else, almost everyone will be heading to the train station.

I absolutely love everything about the Italian culture!!! I think Italy is an amazingly beautiful place full of laid back and easy going people! I one day plan to visit there and hopefully live. xD But as of now I would like to brush up on my italian before I even plan a trip to travel there. Lol

I was hoping if anybody had any spare time to teach me some italian? It would be through email or messenger and whenever you felt like it! I have tried some websites and they were extremely helpful, but I would like to practice talking in italian to improve.

It is always required from tourists who do not stay in a hotel but have friends or relatives to stay with. Search on ebay for a similar type bowl for an approximate value. Look at the selling price. Unless the bowl is in absolutely perfect condition with no chips, and is a true antique (100+ years old) it's value probably isn't that great. A dealer would only give you a fraction of what they might be able to sell it for.
The "estate" value is the next lowest value (what you might want to buy it for). The bowl's "insurance" or "replacement" value would be much higher so you could purchase another one if yours was broken or stolen. And then the antique or second hand dealer would price it even higher to recoup his purchase cost plus overhead and make a profit.

My main interests are Romance languages, literature, history, and the arts. I've been thinking about where I want to go to college for a long time, and I thought, "Well, what better place to learn about those things than Italy?". So I decided on one main university that I'd like to go to (Universita Ca' Foscari di Venezia), and there are a couple of others as well. There is also an "International University of Venice", but from what I understand, it's not a full time school.

Anyway, is there anything that I need to/should do in order to make this happen? Will I have to do anything specific? Anything I should know about? I don't think it's common for kids from my area to want to do this kind of thing, so I doubt my guidance counselor has much exoerience with it. When should I talk to the counselor about it? I'm not a senior yet, but I like to plan ahead.

Lastly, is it a good idea? It's a lot cheaper than American schools, since it's state-supported, and Ca' Foscari is in the top 500 schools in the world, according to Wikipedia. Is there any reason I might regret the decision? Venice seems like a nice place to live. I'm kind of nervous about being in fast cars, so a city where you just walk and occasionally ride a boat to get around appeals to me. I think I would like the lifestyle, so that's not my worry. It's just that I want to know if there's anything bad about studying in a school like that.

Well, I'm actually an Italian citizen and went to college in the USA, so I guess our roles are inverted! So first of all, you need to think about expenses. A single roundtrip flight to Italy from the USA is in and round 1000 dollars alone depending on the season. College in Italy isn't expensive compared to US schools, BUT you have to consider living expenses too. Then you've got to think about how you're going to get around once you're there. A car? Bus? Train? Do you know the language more or less enough to be able to do that on a daily basis? College students in Italy usually commute on average 1-2 hours to school by taking the public transport system (bus/train). So you have to think about that also.
Colleges in Italy are not the same as here in the States either. They are much more similar to a regular US High School in fact. Basically they are buildings where classes are held and thats it, there is no campus per se, no dormitories or cafeterias or places to hang out that are part of the college.
You also have to consider getting a student visa and the time that takes. I'm not sure how hard it is to get one in Italy but it was VERY hard for me to get one for the USA. I had to apply about a year before my classes started just to get it. And even when I applied it was not guaranteed that they would give it to me. I had to have interviews at the embassy, show high school grades, get tested on the english language, show them I had enough funding, show them where I was going to stay, etc etc etc....
Not saying that getting a student visa is hard in Italy because I don't know specifically, I'm just saying that it might take a while and a lot of paperwork (more than you might know).
Finally, you have to consider this above everything else: once you graduate with your italian degree, will it be accepted here in the USA? I know for certain that my undergraduates degree from my american college is not worth anything over there in Italy. Thats why I still live here in the USA. If its not accepted in the USA, what are you going to do?

So a final word of advice from me. Your idea is very very nice in theory. BUT, its going to require a LOT of effort on your part and the outcome might just end up being a wasted 4 year long vacation. Instead, I think you should apply to a good US college that offers good curriculums in literature, history, and the arts and while you're busy with that, apply for one of those study abroad programs with that university. You'll be able to stay a semester or two in a country of your choice, AND still be able to get a degree from your college in America. That way you get the best of both worlds!

In Italy, if your friend stayed overnight, then the hotel needs to see her passport and has a right to request it. I'm surprised they didn't ask her when she arrived at the hotel. Hotels are required to keep a register of all guests and the police do random checks of these registers. It has nothing to do with who is paying the bill.

the basics - the north of Italy is really rich, very industrial and well-educated, whereas the south is poor, mainly agricultural and not so well educated. The north is rich because it is closest to the rest of Europe and therefore has better communications/accessibility and so can build up big, profitable buisnesses, wheres the south is quite distant and not close to any major cities. The climate is also much more temperate in the north and the land is fletter, so building is easiier and cheaper and crops grow better! Also, when Italy unified, the King of Piedmont became the King of Italy (Piedmont is in the north) so the country was ruled by a northern elite which was obviously very rich and powerful.
The south of Italy also has problems with crime e.g. the Mafia, and so deters buisnesses from attempting to build there so it is unlikely to ever match the riches of the north.

Question about reservation fees for Eurail Italy:

I purchased a saver pass (for 2 people traveling together), and in the package that was sent to me, there was a fare table regarding reservations. Firstly, all the main trains listed in the timetable for distances I need to travel (Venice to Florence, Rome to Venice) have a "R" next to it (Reservations Required). The "reservation fees" on the other sheet are listed between 15-25 Euros (is that per person??), much higher than any other country!

Now asking around there were many conflicting answers regarding this predicament - someone suggested that we only fill in the dates on the Eurail pass, without reserving, and hop on any train and try to get 2nd class seats if available and that wouldn't be a problem.

So what should we do? Should we go to each ticket window, get reservations for EVERY train, and be charged a ridiculous amount even though we purchased a pass?

The reservation fees are per person. Italy was much higher than other countries; however, there was a recent change in the fees structure and reservations are more in line with other countries. The fees are now 10 euro for all the higher speed trains or 3 euro for an Intercity or Express train. There is no additional fee for the regional trains, but you apparently aren't on any of those.

You do NOT want to get on a train that requires a reservation without having the reservation in hand. The cost will be much higher on the train since you'll also have to pay a substantial fine. Intercity trains do not require a reservation, so you could get on one of those and try to find an open seat - you could end up having to stand for the trip, but that's fairly rare here.

Eurail only covers the basic fare - you're dealing with a 3rd party seller. You can use it to hop-on and hop-off trains if you stick to the slower regional trains that make many stops and may require train changes for longer trips. It is often cheaper to just get point-to-point tickets directly from the various national railroads particularly when you have a specific itinerary and can buy tickets in advance. Those same trains you are paying a 10 euro charge for on top of the pass often have significant discounts for early purchase of tickets. Right now, you could get 60% off the standard fare for 30 day advance purchase on many trains. (Or 30% for 15 day advance purchase, or 15% for 7 days).

I am torn really because so much of what they do is laughable.

One thing that makes me laugh is the fact that so many complain about how clueless men are about romance and are not romantic enough when these women themselves are virtually barren of sentiment or romance. They could learn a thing or two from women in Italy, Spain, or Latin America.

The other is when they get an inflated sense of their own attractiveness because some hot guy sleeps with them. They don't realize that to the guy, she was just the best he could find THAT night. If you were to sell them, it would likely be at market cost for the WEIGHT of the gold at that karat, not the style of cufflinks themselves. I'd take them to a reputable jeweler and have them appraised if you are that curious. The age, unless they are a designer piece that can be deemed 'vintage', is not necessarily going to increase their value. When selling gold it is often at raw material cost.

I'm going to Italy when I'm eighteen, as an exchange student, and I want to be aware of my surroundings. What are some safety tips, so when I go to Italy, I'll be safe. Because I hear about a few dangerous things occuring there every once and a while.

Walk like you know where you're going. Keep your head up and notice if people are walking too closely to you.
If you think you're being followed for whatever reason, duck into a store or restaurant for a few minutes and watch what the person does. Don't leave if you feel unsafe!
Keep copies of your passport in different places in case it gets lost or stolen.
Keep your bag at the front of your body, keep your hand on the straps, and make sure it's zipped. Keep it on you when you're at a restaurant or bar. If you put your backpack on the ground, loop the strap under the leg of the chair so it can't get grabbed.
Tear out the pages of your guidebook that you're going to use that day, instead of carrying the whole thing so people can't see the cover.
Buy the local versions of street maps instead of using a local one or a tourist office one (In london, they all use London A to Z, for example.)
Do a websearch on pickpockets so you learn the tricks of the trade.
Walk in groups whenever possible.
If you do become a victim of crime, go directly to the police station and file a report. Nothing might come of it, but you never know. At the very least you'll feel like you did something.
Make sure, when you go out, someone knows where you're going, the name of the person you're meeting, and when you think you'll be back. At the very least leave a note in your room with as much info as you have.
You will most likely have a nice safe trip, but knowing these things will make you feel better, and safer.
Have a great time, you will never experience anything like it in your life! :-)

ADVICE! Do i go to Italy or to go my scholarship interview?!?

Okay so in three days i'm leaving to Italy with my two best friends and a couple of other kids from my school. I've been looking forward to this day since the moment i applied to go on the trip. Next year i am going off to college so i applied for scolorships. It turns out that i got a call back from one of the scholarships i applied to. However it is during the week i'll be in Italy.

So now what do i do? Do i go on the trip and forgort about the scholarship or do i cancel the trip and go to the scholarship interview? I wouldn't be able to get my money back for the trip but i have a 33% chance of winning the scholarship because it would be only me and two other kids. The scholarship is worth up to $20,000. I also really badly want to go on the trip because its my senior year and i want to make the most of it! SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO! :(

To me this is a no-brainer---possibly getting a $20K scholarship (that is a lot of money) or going to Italy--Italy will be there in a year, 10 years, 50 years....the $20K will not. If you do not need that money for college, then go to Italy, but if you do need it...again, no brainer. (and don't tell them what you gave up for this, ie Italy, that is tacky).

One thing to bear in mind which might be important is that if you do not have a passport from an EU member state then it's very difficult to get a visa to work in Europe. It can be done but it won't be easy.

Since you won't get hired through an online advertisement, the best way is to go to Italy armed with your resume and qualifications (a degree and a TEFL certificate) and then approach the schools directly at the start of the academic year. You may be able to pick up something there and then. If then you work under the radar for a while the school may decide you're so good they'll sponsor you and organise your visa.

It isn't easy but it can be done and many Americans have found work in Europe like this.

An Italian man that I know claims to be a Nazi, but I don't see how that works. Doesn't a Nazi have to be at least predominantly of Northern European ancestry(i.e. English American)? I don't know of any prominent Nazi groups in Italy (they would be Neo-Fascists possibly, but Mussolini was never nearly as interested in racial theories as Hitler was). We do know that Hitler did not view Italians as ideal, as well as there dark complexions, they also proved to be virtually useless in modern warfare, what did they actually do in WW2 to help Nazi Germany? Even the French managed to repel them from the South. They conquered Ethiopia, with contained an army of men effectively armed with just sticks and stones, congratulations.

First of all, Nazi is not a nationality it is a social group. It's like saying how can a Japanese be catholic. It doesnt matter what country you are from you can be a member of the Nazi party.
Second of all, the Nazi's are generally associated with Germany so how did you come to the conclusion that it was English/ American? Pretty sure the English and the Americans were fighting against the Nazi's in WWII....

What are the global "foreign" perceptions of African Americans?

I am writing a paper on the cultural and psychological influences of media on our perceptions of race and gender. I know that African Americans have relatively poor representation on television and in the movies. (Not every movie but many that I have seen) They play "coonish" stereotypical comedic characters and etc.

African American "gangsta rap music" has further added to the problem by poorly representing the African American community sluts, rapist, urban psycho-killers, jail birds, misfits and deviants. The random acts of violence on the news continues dig an even bigger hole.

The ave African American I know; 30+ are as clueless about rap music as an opera singer in Italy. The reality of African American culture does not seem to quiet live up to or rather "down to" what I see on t.v.

well im in America and from what my father has told me about Guyana there is the same problem there as here just between Indians and Blacks.

in America obviously there are many discriminatory actions against blacks within sports, music, careers, mainly black males, with the whole notion of controlling black bodies more or less for enjoyment. this new video i saw not too long ago clearly demonstrated this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwhxrH2KB… the whole idea of the sambo comes to mind. that this is the idea that white America has about blacks or if they see a bit then they ascribe it as universal.

this is the same thing that goes on in Guyana, from what my father has told me. that the crime and drug rate has gotten so bad because of blacks. i can see where my father is coming from because he grew up very poor but made an honest living for himself and to live within the village and watch blacks come and fight murder rob and steal from family negative thought cannot help but arise. however, from what i got from my father was that blacks are seen as more violent and lazy within Guyana (the phrase n-itis is used often), little of the comedic side is expressed maybe because there has been so much tension between them (i can't remember who was introduced ther first--that might be something to look at).

when my parents came here they had the same fears when up north but i think they have subsided a bit since they have moved south. however, one moment that was strange and reminded me of who the Irish became minstrel or hated blacks so the whites would stop hating on them was when my uncle told some white friends of his that "[he] mixed the kool aid" (in reference to the Jim Jones murders that killed many blacks) this shocked me that he would say that and that the whites found it funny. maybe they have that morbid sense of humor, i don't know.

The weather will be in the 70s or cooler, pack for both. Your budget is okay as long as you remain conscious of what your spending daily. By the way $1000 USD = $600 Euros. Google amalfi coast budget hotels. I say if its your honeymoon, go aLL out!!! Then budget when you come home. Italy is the best place in the world to be! My favorite main attraction in Amalfi is the gorgeous mountains and the sparkling coastline and emerald green seas. Also have yourself some Gelateria = Gelato = Italian Icecream. My favorite is Tiramisu or Biscotti. You can get more then one flavor at a time. Most locals do it that way and if you dont they will know your a tourist. Dress sophisticated sexy and you will when them all. Negotiate flat rate with a taxi before entering, they will try to rip you off. They love euros. Smile have a good time and remember everything is closed in italy from 1pm-7pm (except for gelato shops and cafes) for a ceasta. So eat a big lunch or breakfast! Hope I helped. You will love Italy.
